Imports from non-FSU countries down 5% in Russia in January-February 2014

In January-February 2014, Russia's imports from countries outside the FSU decreased by 5% to $36.518 billion, the Federal Customs Service reported.

Imports of chemical products grew by 30.8% to $3.328 billion, imports of food products and raw materials by 19.2% to $3.024 billion, textile products and footwear by 18.5% to $1.45 billion, mechanical engineering products by 13% to $9.369 billion.

Among the food products and raw materials, there was an increase of imports of grain crops (1.9 times), tobacco (48.3%), alcoholic and non-alcoholic products (27%), dairy products (25.2%), vegetables (23%), fish (18.8%), meat and by-products (13.3%), fruit (3.3%). Imports of sugar decreased by 42.1%, imports of vegetable oil by 1.6%.

Imports of chemical products increased due to larger purchases of pharmaceuticals (38%), soap and detergents (28.9%), polymers and rubber (25.8%), perfumes and cosmetics (18.3%), organic and non-organic chemicals (14.6%).

Among the textile products and footwear, imports of clothing materials increased 1.4-fold, man-made yarn by 31.2%, textile fabric by 24.4%, chemical fibers by 19.1%, textile clothes by 18.1%, ready textile products by 17.5%, footwear by 16.6%, knitwear by 11.6%. Cotton imports decreased by 7.6%.

Among mechanical engineering products, imports of railway locomotive components increased 2.1-fold, optical tools and devices by 29.7%, aircraft by 27.6%, overland transport vehicles by 27.5%, mechanical equipment by 24.4%, while imports of electrical equipment decreased by 18.3%, vessels and watercraft by 4.8%.

In February 2014, the total amount of imports from countries outside the FSU was $19.822 billion (+18.7% against January 2014, -7.8% year-on-year).

Imports of chemical products dropped by 9.8%, mechanical engineering products by 9.7%, textile products and footwear by 6.7%. At the same time, imports of food products grew by 0.9%.

Among food products and raw materials, imports of grain crops increased by 41.5%, dairy products by 40.9%, sugar by 22.7%, alcoholic and non-alcoholic products by 17.2%, vegetables by 13.3%, fish by 6.9%. At the same time, imports of meat and by-products decreased by 29.8%, fruit by 13.2%, tobacco by 13%, vegetable oil by 5.4%.

Among chemicals imports of organic and non-organic chemicals decreased by 18.9%, pharmaceuticals by 18.5%, perfumes and cosmetics by 10%, polymers and rubber by 3.5% whereas imports of soap and detergents increased by 1.3%.

Among textile products and footwear, imports of cotton in February 2014 decreased by 22.8% year-on-year, footwear by 21.3%, chemical fibers by 20.4%, ready textile products by 10.1%, textile fabric by 1.5%. At the same time, the cost of imported clothing materials increased by 13.3%, man-made yarn by 9.3%, textile clothes by 6.2%, knitwear by 1.1%.

Among mechanical engineering products, imports of railway locomotive components decreased by 47.7%, vessels and watercraft by 18%, electrical equipment by 12.9%, overland transport vehicles by 12.9%, optical tools and devices by 11.3%, mechanical equipment by 5.7% whereas imports of aircraft increased by 6.7%
