Headline inflation in Russia up 0.2% in August, 5.6% since January 1

In August 2014, the inflation rate in Russia was 0.2% (against 0.1% in August 2013). Since the start of the year, consumer prices increased by 5.6% (+4.5%), Russia's Federal State Statistics Service informed.

In particular, consumer food prices decreased by 0.3% in August, increased by 0.9% net of ftuits and vegetables; since January 1, they increased by 7.3%; non-food prices advanced by 0.5% (+3.8% since January 1). Paid services to the population went up in price by 0.7% in August, by 5.9% since the start of the year.

In August, just like in the previous month, the general reduction in food prices primarily resulted from cheaper fruits and vegetables. In particular, potatoes dropped in price by 31.8%, tomatoes by 26.8%, carrots, beet and bulb onion by 20.5%, 21.2% and 23.1%, respectively. At the same time, lemons went up in price by 22.5%, oranges by 7.2%, pears by 1.6%. Besides, garlic, frozen vegetables, dry fruit and nuts advanced in price by 0.6-3.1%.

At the same time, almost all kinds of meat and fish products monitored became more expensive. Among meat products, chicken legs, cooled and frozen chicken meat and poultry-based culinary products saw the highest price growth rates (by 4.8%, 4.5%, and 2%, respectively). Among fish products live and chilled fish rose in price by 3%, frozen gutted salmon fish by 2.4%, fish fillet by 1.4%. At the same time, salmon roe became 0.2% cheaper.

Among other food products monitored, special national cheeses and white cheeze (brynza) increased in price by 2.5%, vodka by 1.9%, millet, dry infant milk mixes, ice-cream, fruit juices, loose leaf black tea, natural coffee, sweetened condensed milk, carbonated water, peppercorn, ketchup, chocolate, chocolate glazed soft sweets, canned vegetables, domestic beer, strong grape wines by 0.7-1.3%.

Among the non-food products monitored, tobacco products were still unrivaled in the price growth rate in August. In particular, filter-tipped cigarettes rose in price by 1.8-2.1% (by 16.5-23.4% since the start of the year).

Among motor fuels, gas motor fuel increased in price by 8.3%, AI-92 (AI-93) motor gasoline by 1.6%.

In the run-up to the new school year, schoolchildren's goods became more expensive. In particular, schoolbags and backpacks advanced in price by 3.4%, textbooks, learning aids, didactic materials for comprehensive schools by 2.7%, drawing blocks, writing-books, school writing utensils and stationery as well as certain kinds of outdoor clothes by 1-2.2%.

Among other non-food products monitored, plant soil increased in price by 1.8%, fixed-line telephone sets by 1%.

At the same time, mobile phones, smart phones, tablet computers, laptops, DVD disks containing data, multimedia players, rolling skates, bicycles, solo motorcycles, scooters, imported second-hand motor cars, some kinds of ladies' summer footwear decreased in price by 0.2-0.8%.

Among the housing and utility services monitored, the state/municipal social housing rent rates soared by 6% in August.

The cost of training courses at non-state general education institutions increased by 2.5%, the training courses at higher education institution by 1.9%. The elementary passenger car driving course went up in price by 2%.

Among the outbound tourism services monitored, the cost of cost of recreational trips to Spain, sightseeing tours of Finland and Germany increased by 1.7-2.3%.

Among the household services monitored, the cost of wallpaper application, passenger car wheel camber/toe-in adjustment, photos for documents, stylish hair-cuts for ladies, laundry services and party management services rose in price by 0.7-0.9%.

Economy flight tickets advanced in price by 2.1%, seats in compartments of standard express long-distance trains and in local trains, safe (bank) deposit box rent rate, cost of a standard voluntary motor insurance policy, notary services, certain dental and prosthetic care services by 0.8-1.5%.

At the same time, vouchers for resort centers and holiday hotels in Russia, local mobile calls became 0.1-0.2% cheaper
