The BEAC has developed the concept of the BRICS Climate Council for the sustainable development of the alliance countries. This was stated by Tatyana Zavyalova, Sberbank's Senior Vice President for ESG, at the session "The key role of the BRICS countries in the global climate agenda" during the fifth meeting of the Expert Council on Sustainable Development (ESSD).

The BRICS interstate association now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. As Tatyana Zavyalova noted, eight out of ten of these countries have set goals to achieve carbon neutrality, are implementing large-scale projects in the field of green energy, developing responsible financing practices and forming new carbon markets. BRICS has significant demographic and economic weight in the world — these are dynamically developing economies, which in the future will account for more than 37% of global GDP at purchasing power parity in 2027 (while the G7 countries account for only 28%).

Tatyana Zavyalova, Senior Vice President for ESG at Sberbank: "The BEAC supports the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia to launch a specialized platform for discussing issues of combating climate change within the framework of BRICS and the creation of an expert platform for climate research. The previously proposed concept of the Climate Council as a single center for sustainable development of the Union countries is perfectly integrated into the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development. The key idea of our proposal is to create a coordination center for practices, solutions, standards and expertise of a wide range of stakeholders under the patronage of BRICS representatives on climate, green economy and sustainable development."

The speaker noted that the BEAC is ready to take an active part in organizing and holding the BRICS Climate Agenda in Modern Conditions forum in Moscow. It is expected to discuss, among other things, issues related to the prospect of using climate solutions based on artificial intelligence and the development of responsible financing practices in the countries of the alliance. The BEAC is ready to co-organize sessions in these areas.

Tatyana Zavyalova also recalled that the UN Climate Conference SOR29 will be held in Baku in November. This is an opportunity to demonstrate to the world community Russia's position and the country's achievements on the climate track.

The BEAC is ready to join in the development of the business program and thematic content of the Russian pavilion.

Tatyana Zavyalova, Senior Vice President for ESG at Sberbank: "In addition to direct participation in SOR29, we propose to implement a joint Russian-Azerbaijani initiative on the Samur River. This river flows along the border of our countries and is one of the main sources of water supply in Baku. Our initiative to preserve biodiversity and protect the reservoir will become a landmark project demonstrating the real interaction of neighboring countries on the climate and environmental agenda."

The meeting was attended by Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation; Vladimir Ilyichev, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation; Ilya Torosov, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Nikita Kondratiev, Director of the Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Alexander Kirevnin, Director of the Department of Financial Banking and Investment Development of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation; First Vice President of JSCGazprombank Ekaterina Salugina-Fortieth; Nikita Vorobyov, Director of Ecology and Climate at NLMK; Alexander Nazarov, Head of Investor Relations at PJSC Novatek; Elena Myakotnikova, Director of Sustainable Development, Member of the Executive Committee, RUSAL Management JSC; Oksana Gogunskaya, CEO of Kontur JSC; Head of the Climate Change Economics Laboratory at the National Research University HSE, Head of the Working Group on Sustainability, Human Well-being, Environmental and Food Security of the Expert Council on the Russian Presidency of the BRICS Igor Makarov and others.
