In October 2025, global steel production continued to decline. According to the World Steel Association (WSA), 143.3 million tons of steel were smelted this month, which is 5.9% lower than the same indicator in 2024 and 1.1% higher than the total of the previous month. In total, 1,517.6 million tons of steel were smelted in the world in January-October 2025, which is 2.1% lower than in the same period of 2024, with China's share in the total smelting volume being 54%. Average daily production decreased by 2.2% compared to September to 4,623 million tons. This is the lowest figure since December 2023.
In January-October 2025, Russia reduced steel production by 4.9% compared to a year earlier, to 56.5 million tons, retaining fifth place among metal—producing countries (according to the WSA). China reduced steel production by 3.9% to 817.9 million tons. In Japan, smelting decreased by 4.1% to 67.3 million tons, in South Korea — by 3.6% to 51.1 million tons. Germany also reduced smelting by 9.9% to 28.5 million tons, and Iran by 1% to 25.4 million tons. At the same time, India increased steel production by 10% to 136 million tons, and Turkey — by 1.2% to 31.3 million tons. In the USA, steel production increased by 2.81% to 68.4 million tons during this period. According to the WSA, 5.3 million tons of steel were smelted in Russia in October, which is 6.2% less than a year earlier.
The index of production in the extraction of metal ores in Russia in August 2025 decreased by 2.5% compared to August 2024. The production of iron ore concentrate in August amounted to 7.1 million tons (-7.5%). The production of raw or semi—processed gold, or in powder form, increased by 6.8% compared to August 2024, and by 7.5% compared to July 2025. The production of raw or semi—processed silver in August 2025 increased by 21.4% compared to the same period in 2024, and by 16% compared to the previous month.
The index of metallurgical production in Russia in September 2025 decreased by 1.7% compared to September 2024, and by 0.8% compared to the previous month. Pig iron production in September 2025 decreased by 3.4% compared to the same month in 2024, while the output of rolled ferrous metals increased by 0.2%. The production of seamless pipes in January-September 2025 amounted to 290.7 thousand tons (-15.4% compared to January-September 2024), casing pipes — 1206 thousand tons (-11.6%), including tubing - 355.6 thousand tons (+1.4%).
