Every year, Russian companies grow aware of the need to comply with social and environmental standards and to aim at improving the living and working conditions of the staff and other people living in the areas where they run business. Increasingly more businesses, primarily major companies, are spending time and money on sustainability reports. Some are taking first steps on this path, while others have been disclosing their progress, solved and pending issues to their shareholders, employees and society for years. Some companies publish comprehensive sustainable
development reports relying on international standards and requirements, others add a sustainable development section to their annual reports.
The ranking aims at showcasing the best practices, encouraging businesses to expand their environmental activities, to address more social issues and to provide higher support to the areas where they operate.
The key ranking factor is completeness of the data provided. We believe that society and shareholders have the right to be informed about companies’ efforts and progress as regards sustainable development and whether companies are aware of their social and environmental responsibility towards future generations.
The ranking does not assess the company’s sustainable development efficiency. It rather highlights to which extent companies are honest with the public and ready to disclose environmental data, details and facts about their relations with their staff and society, to disclose compliance with the generally accepted sustainable development reporting rules and requirements. Our assessment is based on the very fact of availability of such disclosure, data and statements.
The ranking includes just over 60 sustainable developmentreports. Reports from 26 companies are ranked in the two top groups. These companies provided comprehensive reports containing the key performance indicators of their public interest activities. The most complete reports were published by Gazprom, Rushydro and SUEK.
