ExxonMobil plans to begin expanding CCS at its facility in La Barge, Wyoming, by the end of the year. This project will reduce emissions at the enterprise by 1.2 million tons per year and support the aspirations to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) for operational assets by 2050. This is stated in the company's message.
ExxonMobil also expects to complete the construction of a 2.3-mile pipeline that will connect CF Industries' ammonia plant in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, to the company's CCS network. The pipeline will start sending up to 2.2 million tons of CO2 emissions into the company's network, rather than into the atmosphere. For example, the ExxonMobil network on the Gulf coast in the United States will be able to capture up to 100 million tons of CO2.
At the same time, in 2024, the company signed contracts with the CF Industries nitrogen plant in Mississippi and the NG3 natural gas collection facility in Louisiana. Their total CCS obligations amount to more than 14 million tons of CO2 per year. ExxonMobil also merged the acquired Denbury Resources companies and now owns the largest network of CO2 pipelines in the United States. They will be used for the safe transportation of CO2 received from customers.
In addition, the company has completed the construction of a CO2 injection well in east Texas. Once approved by the Environmental Protection Agency, it will be used to send trapped CO2 deep underground for safe and permanent storage.
