The Federal Environmental Operator (FSUE "FEO", the enterprise of the State Corporation "Rosatom") has begun to eliminate the accumulated environmental damage on the territory of the former Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill (BCBC). This is stated in the message of Rosatom.

The task of the federal project "Preservation of Lake Baikal" to eliminate the threat of pollution of the world's largest natural freshwater reservoir will be achieved within the next four years.

According to Maxim Pogodin, Director General of FSUE "FEO", whose words are quoted in the message, all the necessary formal procedures have already been completed, relevant state contracts have been concluded and permission has been obtained for the construction of two accumulated damage facilities on the territory: the site of the former sewage treatment plant (DSP), which is located less than 100 m from the shoreline of the lake, and the Babkhinsky landfill, containing more than 2.2 million cubic meters of industrial and household waste. At the moment, work is underway on the sites to prepare the territory for the placement of future technological infrastructure facilities.

In 2021, an emergency regime was introduced on the territory of the former Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill (BCBC) due to the risk of overflow of above-sludge waters. This could lead to the destruction of hydraulic structures, the ingress of significant volumes of sludge-lignin on the relief and pollution of the lake.

On behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation and in accordance with the decisions of the Irkutsk Region Commission on Emergency Situations, FSUE "FEO", determined by the contractor for the elimination of accumulated damage on the territory of the BCBC, organized work to lower the level of above-sludge waters at the landfills "Solzansky" and "Babkhinsky".
