The German defense concern Rheinmetall AG has completed the acquisition of Naval Vessels Lürssen (NVL), one of the largest German shipbuilding companies, together with all its subsidiaries. This is reported in a Rheinmetall press release.
The agreement between Rheinmetall and NVL, the defense division of the Lürssen Group, was signed in September 2025, and received regulatory approval in October.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
According to a Rheinmetall statement, the deal allows "the creation of a German systems enterprise for the development and production of modern warships and coast guard boats, as well as autonomous marine surface systems."
Thus, Rheinmetall continues to expand its portfolio in the marine segment and strengthens its position as a comprehensive supplier of defense technologies in Germany and Europe. During its operation, NVL has built about 1,000 ships for 50 fleets and coast guard services.
NVL is a German shipbuilding company within the Lürssen Group. NVL operates four shipyards in Germany and facilities in Bulgaria, Croatia, Egypt and Brunei. NVL is considered a pioneer in the development of unmanned marine surface systems. The company was spun off from the Lürssen Group in 2021 and continued operations as an independent company within the group.
Rheinmetall AG is a German concern for the production of defense equipment (missile systems, fire control systems and other military technologies) and automotive components (engine control systems, components for security systems). The headquarters is located in Dusseldorf (Germany).
