The Azule Energy joint venture between the Italian oil and gas company Eni S.p.A. and the British BP plc has launched the NGC Gas Treatment Plant in northern Angola as part of the New Gas Consortium (NGC). This is reported in a press release from Eni.

The new plant is part of a $4 billion project to extract natural gas on the Angolan continental shelf. NGC's production capacity is 400 million ft3/day of gas and 20,000 barrels of gas condensate. The final investment decision on the NGC project was made in July 2022. In October 2025, Azule Energy drilled the first well within the NGC.

The NGC project involves the development of the Quiluma and Maboqueiro offshore fields using offshore platforms in shallow waters. The expected production volume is 4 billion m3/year. The extracted gas will be purified and then supplied to the Angola LNG liquefied Natural gas (LNG) plant for subsequent export and domestic consumption.

Previously, gas was extracted in Angola mainly as a by-product of oil production (associated petroleum gas). With the launch of processing facilities, the full-fledged implementation of the NGC project begins, which will allow Angola to become a strategic player in the global natural gas market. The NGC project supports the country's energy diversification and promotes growth in other key sectors, including fertilizer production.

The New Gas Consortium includes Azule Energy as the operator with a 37.4% share, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company - 31%, Sonangol E&P — 19.8%, TotalEnergies — 11.8% and ANPG as the national concessionaire.

Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational energy company and one of the largest oil companies in the world with a market capitalization of 40 billion euros. The main production regions include Africa and Kazakhstan, while the main sales markets are Italy and other European countries. The headquarters is located in San Donato Milanese (Milan).

BP is a British multinational oil and gas company with headquarters in London (England). About a third of the company's revenue comes from operations in the United States.
