The Government of the Russian Federation has approved the procedure and criteria for determining particularly significant tourist routes. The corresponding resolution was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

The procedure and criteria will come into force on July 1, 2022. Both existing routes and completely new ones will be able to claim the status of national. They will be selected at the request of the regions. This work will be handled by an expert council, which will include representatives of Rostourism and the tourist industry. The council may also include representatives of non-profit organizations in the field of culture, history, science, local history, art history.

The decision on whether the declared tourist route can have the status of a national one will be made based on the results of the examination of documents and face-to-face protection of the project. The main requirement is to meet certain criteria.

Among such criteria is perspective. It implies that the route will contribute to the growth of tourist flow in the region by at least 25% compared to the previous year. Another criterion is recognition, that is, the route should be included in Russian and international ratings, be presented at expert sites (exhibitions, forums, conferences), there should be publications about it in Russian and foreign media, social networks.

Consistency is also among the criteria. In addition to the region, tour operators, representatives of the hotel business, and tour bureaus should take part in the development of the application for the selection of the route.

In addition, there must be at least one significant object on the route. For example, these may be objects from the UNESCO list, historical and cultural monuments of federal significance, natural objects in specially protected areas, monuments of Russian architecture, places associated with the most important events of Russian history, with the lives of outstanding people.

The rules also indicate that national routes can pass through the territory of several regions and have a specific theme, for example, cultural and educational, rural, ecological, gastronomic, industrial, scientific. At the same time, national routes must have a navigation system, tourist maps, guidebooks and souvenirs.
