The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) has closed the financing process, which allows the implementation of the first carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) project in the UK to begin. This is reported in the TotalEnergies press release.
NEP's shareholders are French oil and gas company TotalEnergies SE (10%), British BP plc (45%) and Norwegian Equinor ASA (45%).
The NEP infrastructure will initially serve three carbon dioxide capture projects in the Teesside region (NZT Power, H2Teesside and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture). CCS provides for the constant accumulation of up to 4 million tons of CO2 per year.
The NEP infrastructure includes an onshore CO2 collection network, compressor units and a 145 km offshore pipeline connected to underwater installations for injection into the Endurance salt aquifer at a depth of 1000 m under the seabed.
Construction of the project will begin in mid-2025 with the commissioning of the first CO2 storage facility in 2028.
NEP is a provider of CO2 transportation and storage services for the East Coast Cluster (ECC). NEP will initially serve the NZT Power, H2Teesside and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 projects, which were selected for the first connection by the British Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in March 2023 as part of the UK's carbon capture and CO2 storage efficiency cluster planning.
NEP has received the UK's first Carbon Dioxide Transport and Storage License under the Transportation and Storage Regulatory Investment (TRI) regime, which opens up opportunities for private investment in long-term infrastructure by providing incentives and protecting the CCU market in the UK.
The North Sea Transition Authority has also issued a CO2 storage permit to NEP, which allows for the start of CO2 injection and storage after the completion of infrastructure construction.
TotalEnergies aims to ensure significant decarbonization of industrial enterprises with hard-to-recover fuel reserves through projects such as Northern Lights in Norway, Norther Endurance Partnership in the UK, Bayou Bend in the USA, Aramis in the Netherlands and Bifrost in Denmark.
TotalEnergies is implementing an integrated energy strategy in the UK that combines energy production from renewable sources and power generation capacity. The company is one of the UK's largest suppliers of gas and electricity to businesses and the public sector.
TotalEnergies is an integrated energy company for the production of energy carriers (oil and biofuels, natural gas and environmentally friendly gases, renewable energy sources and electricity). The company has offices in 120 countries. The headquarters is located in Paris (France).
