In the first half of 2020, the M&A market weakened significantly in Russia. The total amount of M&A transactions in January-June 2020 fell 2.3 times year-on-year to $14.74 billion (against $33.43 billion a year earlier), according to the recent issue of AK&M Information Agency's MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS MARKET monthly bulletin.
211 transactions were registered during this period, their number growing by 41.5% year-on-year (168 transactions in January-June 2019). In ruble terms, the amount of transactions for the first six months of 2020 saw a deep but still milder slump (twice to RUB 1,064.54 billion from RUB 2,157.94 billion in the first six months of 2019) as a result of the ruble depreciation.
AK&M analysts expect an increase in the activity of large businesses, particularly, state-owned enterprises, the only players that can afford acquisitions amid the crisis.
