This year, Severstal will invest over 95 million rubles in the implementation of five water protection measures at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Combine (CherMK). This is stated in the company's message.
Seven of the nine existing water outlets into the Yagorba, Costa and Sheksna rivers have already been closed at the CRMK. At the same time, 98.4% of the water used for production needs is in the company's own circulating cycle," said Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel Division and Resource Assets.
Currently, wastewater discharge from the plant's treatment facilities into the Costa River is carried out through two outlets — No. 3 and No. 10. At the same time, in 2024, the discharge of pollutants at outlet No. 3 decreased by 1.3 times, and the volume of wastewater decreased by 1.2 times compared to 2023.
Currently, the implementation of comprehensive measures for the production of No. 3 is continuing. So, this year, the technical re-equipment of the zinc-containing sludge processing line in the sintering workshop No. 3 will be carried out. This will reduce the amount of unbalanced water entering the ash and sludge storage facilities, as well as generally reduce the content of pollutants in wastewater from issue No. 3.
Severstal is a vertically integrated mining and metallurgical company that creates new products and integrated solutions from steel together with customers and partners. The company's production assets are concentrated in Russia. The shares are traded on the Moscow Stock Exchange (ticker CHMF).
