In December 2022, the Russian engineering industry experienced a decline for the tenth month in a row. Total production in five engineering industries was 14.1% lower than in December 2021. In general, according to Rosstat, over the twelve months of 2022, the total turnover of enterprises in all sectors of mechanical engineering significantly decreased by 7.8% compared to the same period in 2021. In December last year, Rosstat recorded a significant decline in industrial production in all five engineering sectors in annual dynamics. The production of motor vehicles decreased at the highest rate. By the end of 2022, only two of the five sectors of mechanical engineering showed an increase in production in the range of 1.7-1.9%. In January of this year, the seasonally adjusted PMI index of Russia's manufacturing industries, which tracks the general market situation, remained above 50 points, demonstrating the sustainability of improvements in operating conditions in the entire manufacturing sector.
The Kaliningrad holding "Avtotor" has started industrial production of Kaiyi brand cars. The production of cars is carried out on a modernized conveyor. For the preparation of production, more than 200 items of robotic equipment were readjusted and reprogrammed, electronic tools were purchased, new software for electronic systems testing stands was introduced, and automated conveyor elements were configured and adjusted. The Kaiyi E5 production line employs more than 400 people, including workers and engineering and technical personnel.
Russian factories of construction and road engineering produced in 2022 products totaling 75.6 billion rubles, which is 35% more than in the same period of 2021. Such data is provided by the Rosspetsmash-Stat portal. Russian factories report aggressive imports of road construction equipment. It is not uncommon for such machines and equipment to be sold at or below cost. In addition, in 2022, the volume of agricultural machinery production in the Russian Federation amounted to 250.6 billion rubles, which is 15.1% more than in 2021. At the same time, in quantitative terms, the output of agricultural machinery decreased in a number of key segments.
Russia has managed to restore imports of some types of machine-building products to almost pre-crisis levels. This conclusion is contained in a study by the American non-profit organization Silverado Policy Accelerator. Thus, many imported consumer goods such as smartphones, household appliances, and passenger cars are still available in Russia thanks to countries that have acted as transshipment points for re-export. At the same time, according to the January assessment of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, imports of goods and services to Russia last year amounted to about $346 billion, which is only 9% less than in 2021.
