The Government of the Russian Federation has approved a concept for the development of suburban passenger rail transport until 2035. This was announced by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Its main objectives are to improve connectivity and transport accessibility of territories; increase the comfort of transportation; ensure environmental friendliness and safety of transportation; and introduce long-term mechanisms for tariff regulation and financing of transportation.
The regions will switch to a long–term planning model and will conclude long-term contracts with carriers - from three years or more. This will allow specialized companies to invest more actively in the purchase of modern railcars, providing domestic industrial enterprises with stable and predictable orders, the report says.
As a result of the implementation of the concept, up to 7 thousand units of railway rolling stock will be purchased by the end of 2035. It will be possible to sell travel tickets electronically on all routes. Passenger traffic will increase by at least 15%.
