The Bank of Russia has approved rules for the safe use of QR codes for payments and transfers. The relevant standard is of a recommendatory nature and will enter into force on February 17, 2025. This is stated in the message of the regulator.
The approved standard should improve the security of operations using QR codes. Financial organizations and companies from other fields that use QR codes for payments and transfers will be able to develop internal security measures based on this regulation.
Depending on the types of QR codes, the Central Bank has systematized the threats that may arise at each stage of the operation, as well as typical ways to protect against these threats. Separate security measures are also provided for depositing and withdrawing money at an ATM using a QR code.
