The European Union has approved a grant of 645.2 million euros for the implementation of the Bornholm Energy Island hybrid offshore project. This is stated in the EU message.
The financing is provided within the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility(CEF) Energy program. It is an EU foundation that supports major energy union projects managed by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA).
The European Commission provided constant support to the project at all stages. Its completion will be an important step towards building a more sustainable, interconnected and environmentally friendly energy system in Europe.
The project is being implemented by the Danish company Energinet and the German company 50Hertz. This will make it possible to combine numerous wind farms into a single offshore energy hub on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. From there, 3 GW of marine renewable electricity will flow onshore and be distributed across Denmark and Germany.
