The volume of electric generation in Russia in January-July 2026 decreased by 0.1% compared to the same period in 2025 to 692.2 billion. kWh. Fedor Opadchy, head of the Unified Energy System System Operator, said that from the beginning of the year to the beginning of September, electricity consumption in the country decreased by 0.1% compared to the same period in 2025. The regulator's forecast of energy consumption growth for the entire current year is expected to increase by 1-1.5%.

This is stated in issue No. 1689 of the monthly bulletin "Branches of the Russian Economy: manufacturing, finance, securities. Electric Power Industry" dated September 09, 2026.

The volume of electricity exports from Russia in the first half of 2026 increased by 4% year-on-year to 3.2 billion. kWh. Inter RAO increased electricity supplies to Kazakhstan by 20.3%, to 1.68 billion kWh, which is 53% of the group's total exports. Supplies to Mongolia decreased by 6%, to 450 million kWh. This country accounts for 14% of operations. 1.07 billion kWh were exported to other countries, which is 11% less than in the first six months of 2025. Electricity imports to Russia, on the contrary, decreased by 5.3%, falling to the level of 1.21 billion kWh. In the reporting period, Kazakhstan accounted for 94% of Russia's electricity imports.

The capacity of Russia's solar power plants increased by 16.5% in January-June and reached 2.97 GW. Such data is provided by the Association for the Development of Renewable Energy. The indicator of wind power plants (wind farms) increased by 21.4% and amounted to 3.12 GW. The capacity of small hydroelectric power plants remained at the level of the same period last year and amounted to 1.31 GW. From the beginning of 2014 to July 1, 2026, renewable energy generation facilities with a total capacity of 6.019 GW were put into operation, including 2.662 GW in solar energy, 3.017 GW in wind energy and 212 MW in small-scale hydro generation.

The Russian President announced plans to introduce about 30 more GW of nuclear power plant capacity in the country. This will make it possible to replace decommissioned power units and increase the total nuclear generation capacity in the country. It is planned to expand the geographical location of power units: modern nuclear power plants will appear in the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. This approach will make it possible to balance the energy supply of remote and actively developing regions, as well as take into account the long-term needs of the economy.
