Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Government, with the participation of the Prosecutor General's Office, to check the technical condition of the tanker fleet vessels by June 1, 2025. This is stated in the Kremlin's message.

Measures aimed at improving the safety of tanker fleet vessels should be taken and, if necessary, proposals should be submitted to strengthen control over the technical condition of such vessels.

The Head of State instructed to analyze regulatory legal acts and regulatory and technical documentation that regulate the transportation of oil and petroleum products by sea and river vessels, storage and transshipment on these vessels, as well as issues of preventing and eliminating their spills during such transportation.

Based on the results of the analysis, it is necessary to submit proposals for improving regulatory legal acts and regulatory and technical documentation.

In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Prosecutor General's Office will check compliance by economic entities with legislation regulating the prevention and elimination of environmental pollution by oil and petroleum products from ships, including as a result of spills.

By March 15, 2025, the Government, with the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will evaluate the possibility of using and must ensure the use of Russian equipment, technologies, research results and experimental developments to eliminate the consequences of an emergency caused by the spill of petroleum products as a result of the tanker crash in the Kerch Strait.

Earlier, on December 15, 2024, fuel oil tankers Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 crashed in the Kerch Strait. There was a fuel spill in the area.
