A comprehensive reconstruction of the Three Stations Square bus stop has been completed in Moscow. It already accepts passengers of the MCD-2 (Nakhabino – Podolsk) and is fully ready for integration into the MCD-4, which will soon connect Aprelevka and Zheleznodorozhny.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and General Director – Chairman of the Management Board of JSC "Russian Railways" Oleg Belozerov got acquainted with the updated passenger infrastructure. They examined the progress of the reconstruction of the Kursky railway station – the area of three railway stations.

During the reconstruction of this section, the railway workers carried out the reconstruction of 47 city communications with a total length of about 10 km, ensuring the safety of 6 objects.

As part of the work, the approaches to the Kursk railway station were also completely redesigned, for which the reconstruction of the Kazakovsky highway overpass was carried out and the Novobasman overpass and pedestrian bridge in the area of the Khomutovsky dead end were strengthened. Also, 1.8 km of retaining walls up to 9.6 m high were built, which perform, among other things, the function of suppressing noise from the railway, 90 thousand cubic meters of concrete of retaining walls and overpass supports were poured, 8 km of tracks and 18 switches were laid.

"By any measure, this is one of the most difficult projects for the reconstruction of the railway infrastructure inside the city. I think it is the most difficult in the history of Moscow, one of the most difficult in the world. New tracks have been laid, in fact, a new railway station, three overpasses, three overpasses have been built, and all this in the city center without blocking the movement of trains, metro, and automobile traffic. And today it gives full confidence that the MCD-4 project will be launched this year, trains will run at intervals of 3 minutes. We have already restored the movement of the MCD-2, which ran on a limited schedule due to reconstruction. Congratulations to everyone on this big event, this is a serious step forward. "Russian Railways have accomplished a feat," Sergei Sobyanin said.

The Mayor of Moscow also stressed that the railway section was reconstructed a year and a half earlier than the stated deadline.

"What has been done here is an absolutely unique project. There is both dense urban development and architectural monuments, so it would be simply impossible to implement it without specific solutions. Every detail has been verified: traffic, noise protection, transfer of city communications, strengthening of retaining walls, etc. It seems to be only 4 km, but two of them have noise screens installed. And transport hubs, which today can and should be called Moscow city railway stations, are ahead of reality in terms of comfort. They allow almost any passenger to feel comfortable, including those with disabilities. There are elevators, escalators, understated ticket offices, as well as a video terminal, which makes it possible for passengers to receive consultations, including in sign language," Oleg Belozerov said.

The head of JSC "Russian Railways" also separately stressed that all historical architectural solutions were preserved during the reconstruction:

"The new TPU today externally corresponds to the general architectural composition of the Area of the three stations. And in the Imperial Pavilion, built in 1896, a new cultural space has been organized for residents and guests of the capital."

For passengers of central diameters, 2 island platforms and a passenger lobby have been erected at the station Area of three stations. The first part of it was opened to passengers in July 2022. Its full opening took place today. After the launch of the MCD-4, there will be a convenient two-minute transfer between D2 and D4, and trains will stop twice as often as now: with an interval of about 3 minutes during rush hours.

The stop point Area of three railway stations is an exemplary hub with ticket offices, elevators and escalators, ticket printing and vending machines, sanitary rooms, places to wait for trains and dynamic navigation. There are also reference information video terminals, thanks to the convenient interface of which you can find the necessary information in them yourself or use the services of a video operator. In 2023-2024, all TPUs of Moscow central diameters will be equipped with such information video terminals. The station Area of three stations is also equipped with a seamless Wi-Fi system. Passengers, having logged in to the network once, get continuous access to high-speed Internet via Wi-Fi.

During the construction work, the historical appearance of the Kalanchevsky overpass and the station Area of three railway stations was recreated. When finishing, atypical solutions, stylized for the beginning of the XX century, were used. For example, in order to preserve the neoclassical design of the Kalanchevsky overpass with arches, pylons and niches, railway workers lined it with gray crushed granite, repeating the layered texture of the facade created by architect Alexey Shchusev.
