According to the state forest register, in 2024, the area of specially protected areas (RAM) increased by 2 million hectares and amounted to 88.9 million hectares.

The largest increase in the area of such plots was recorded in Irkutsk (by 1.2 million hectares), Kirov (by 586 thousand hectares), Magadan (by 224 thousand hectares) regions, the Republic of Buryatia (by 216 thousand hectares) and the Chechen Republic (by 118 thousand hectares).

"Increasing the area of specially protected forest areas is the basis for preserving biodiversity in forests, as well as protecting unique ecosystems for the future generation. It is worth noting that the coastal protection areas located along the water bodies are the largest lakes and occupy about 22 million hectares. Soil–protective forest areas along steep slopes occupy 6 million hectares, and specially protected parts and zones of specially protected natural territories - 3.4 million hectares," said Vyacheslav Spirienkov, Deputy head of the Federal Forestry Agency.

RAM can be allocated in protective, operational, and backup forests. Special rules of forest management apply in such territories, and the possibilities of logging and construction of facilities are significantly limited.
