A regular meeting of the Joint Russian-Kazakh Working Group on coordination of actions to prevent floods and floods on transboundary rivers was held in the videoconference format. The Russian side was headed by Dmitry Savostitsky, Head of the Department for Water Management Regulation of Rosvodresursov, and the delegation of Kazakhstan was headed by Gulmira Imasheva, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Regulation, Protection and Use of Water Resources of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Representatives of the Russian regions bordering Kazakhstan also took part in the work.
The parties discussed the current hydrological situation and the passage of spring floods on transboundary rivers, including the basins of the Irtysh, Ishim, Tobol and Ural. It was noted that the spring flood of 2026 entered the final stage and passed in a regular mode. Thanks to the coordinated actions of the two countries, it was possible to ensure the safe passage of flood waters and minimize the risks of flooding.
A second flood wave is expected to form on the Ishim River, but its parameters are projected to be significantly lower than previously expected values. The hydrological situation remains under control.
The meeting participants paid special attention to the issues of regulating the flow on the Irtysh River. Currently, the parties have begun to implement a special ecological release of water, which will be carried out in agreed volumes and modes and will not exceed the projected figures.
Following the meeting, the participants emphasized the effectiveness of joint work and agreed to continue coordinating actions during the passage of the spring flood.
"This year's flood has entered its final stage and passed smoothly thanks to the coordinated work of Russian and Kazakhstani specialists. We continue to closely monitor the hydrological situation. Another meeting The joint Russian-Kazakh working group will be held in the next 7-10 days," he said. Dmitry Savostitsky.
