A train carrying the first shipment of Russian grain delivered via a new railway route through the territory of Azerbaijan has arrived in Armenia. 1 thousand tons of wheat of the 3rd class were exported.

Wheat was shipped from the Ulyanovsk region by the Great Gates company, loading and processing were carried out at the Dimitrovgrad elevator. The shipment was made in cooperation with Russian Railways.

The development of this area opens up additional opportunities for increasing exports to the countries of the South Caucasus.

Armenia imports about 450-500 thousand tons of grain per year. Almost 100% of the volume comes from Russia. The new route provides transit traffic through the territory of Azerbaijan and Georgia, which reduces transportation costs and increases the sustainability of supplies. Previously, exports were mainly carried out by road through the land border crossing, as well as by sea through the ports of Georgia.

The resumption of rail transit became possible after Azerbaijan's decision to lift restrictions on the movement of goods towards Armenia. The relevant agreements were reached in October 2025 with the participation of the governments of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia and are a direct result of the work of the Trilateral Working Group of the Deputy Prime Ministers of the countries. This opened up the possibility of direct deliveries of Russian agricultural products to Armenia by rail for the first time since the early 1990s.
