The Beautyscan service determines the condition of the skin from a photo. Artificial intelligence, machine vision and neural networks help him in this.

Specialists of Sechenov University together with the Russian-Korean biotech startup studio Skolkovo "Scanderm" (Scanderm) have developed a medical intelligent system Beautyscan for remote assessment of the condition of the skin, hair or nails. She can identify problems from a photo. All you need is a phone or computer camera and internet access.

There are two stages in the program: photo analysis and questionnaire. And here, digital assistants came to the aid of doctors — artificial intelligence, machine vision and neural networks. They help to identify the features and flaws of the skin and give personal recommendations.

"According to statistics, more than 30% of Russians do not go to doctors due to lack of time, 48% of the population have at least one dermatological problem, and 80% of people with similar diseases have a reduced quality of life. Our system can not only pick up effective care for a person, advise cosmetics, refer them to a specialist or to a telemedicine service — it can also give him advice on lifestyle changes," says dermatovenerologist, assistant at the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases named after V.A. Rakhmanov of the N.V. Sklifosovsky Sechenovsky Institute of Clinical Medicine. University Candidate of Medical Sciences Ekaterina Grekova.

The system distinguishes between 14 skin diseases — it has more than 300 thousand photos at its disposal. For the effective selection of funds, the staff of the department and the IT team created their own database of 3,500 cosmetic ingredients with proven properties.

"More than 40 doctors and programmers are working on our technologies. Our service has won almost all Russian competitions and accelerators in medicine, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, and we also took third place in the largest competition of technology companies in South Korea among 2,568 teams from 129 countries. Now a similar program is being developed to recognize hair problems. And a joint project with Linkerverse from South Korea — a service for diagnosing the condition of nails and hands — received an award at the consumer electronics show CES 2023,” Ekaterina Grekova notes.

As of today, the Beautyscan service has already been used by more than 2.5 million people around the world. According to the developers, both public and private clinics need it. It will be useful in the work of cosmetologists-aestheticians: artificial intelligence will help them select care procedures for their clients. It will also be useful for hairdressers and beauty salon workers. The service can detect the disease at an early stage. Experts say that this can reduce healthcare costs and will allow saving 208 million rubles annually for every million people.
