Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer, presented results for 2021. The main directions of the company's work were the development of an online platform for entrepreneurs, digitalization of business processes and improvement of services, access to new markets

Key indicators

GMV turnover (net turnover from sales of goods and services, including refunds) in 2021 increased by 93% to 844 billion rubles. In the 4th quarter of 2021, sales updated the historical maximum reached in the 3rd quarter of 2021 and amounted to 304.8 billion rubles, which is 101% more than in the same period of 2020.

According to Wildberries forecasts, the profit by the end of 2021 will amount to about 18 billion rubles (before taxation), which will be invested in the further development of the company: the construction of new logistics complexes, improving the quality of service, expanding the assortment.

The number of orders reached 808.6 million (+146% 2021/2020), the peak number of orders fell in December - about 3.5 million daily.

Buyers purchased over 1 billion products through Wildberries, which is 81% more than in 2020.

The largest sales volumes by category:

- Clothing, shoes and accessories: 336.5 billion rubles (+55% 2021/2020)

- Children's goods: 115.7 billion rubles (+63%)

- Household and cottage goods: 114.6 billion rubles (+111%)

- Household appliances and electronics: 76.4 billion rubles (+64%)

- Cosmetics and perfumes: 71.5 billion rubles (+90%)

The highest sales growth rates:

- Jewelry JEWELRY (+304% 2021/2020)

- Construction materials (+282%)

- Large household appliances (+260%)

- Recreation and camping (+228%)

- Car Accessories (+222%)

In 2021, Wildberries' customer audience reached 113 million users (MAU)

Wildberries has built 350,000 sq. m of new warehouse space in 2021, their total area exceeded 720,000 square meters, which allowed to accelerate the delivery of goods to the regions of the country and optimize the costs of partner entrepreneurs for logistics

New opportunities for Russian business

In 2021, Wildberries continued its transformation from an online retailer into an online platform that unites Russian entrepreneurs to sell goods and provide services:

- More than 410,000 new entrepreneurs have come to the online platform - more than in the entire 17-year history of the company. At the beginning of 2022, more than 500,000 entrepreneurs and companies are registered on Wildberries, over 80% are from the small business sector and self-employed

- Launch of the marketplace sales model from the warehouses of entrepreneurs, delivery of goods by sellers. This made it possible to optimize the partners' costs for logistics and commission, expand their offer to Wildberries

- Development of a partner network of pick-up points. Entrepreneurs can open branded pick-up points not only in Russia, but also in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. In 2021, a subsidy program was in effect to open new delivery points.

- Launch of partner logistics and joint distribution centers. Small businesses can provide cargo transportation services through WB Drive, as well as earn money on the acceptance and storage of goods in partner distribution centers

Expanding the geography of work

In 2021, Wildberries entered the markets of 11 new countries - the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Turkey and Estonia. The geography of the online retailer's work already covers 19 countries. Thanks to this, Russian entrepreneurs selling goods through Wildberries were able to enter new markets and increase their own export sales.

Digitalization and IT

Wildberries strengthens IT teams - the number of developers has grown from 530 to 700 in 2021. The plans include further active development of internal projects, so in 2022 the company opened another 160 vacancies.

The main focus of IT is aimed at developing its own software and unique technological solutions:

- Fault-tolerant infrastructure that provides instant response for tens of millions of users in 24x7 mode, and is able to easily scale to new challenges

- Development of AI in Wildberries services: digitalization of the contact center, increase in the speed of processing user requests, automation of promotions and calculations, improvement of search

- ”Uberization" of HR: own IT solutions to attract performers, digitalization of personnel document flow and areas of interaction with employees and performers

- FinTech: integration of new payment systems, software development for payment transactions

- Mobile First concept: the share of mobile traffic is already about 90%, so IT teams are working on new and existing mobile applications and a mobile website for users

In 2022, Wildberries will continue to work on inhouse projects to improve the user experience, including the implementation of projects to further reduce the "bureaucratic burden” on entrepreneurs - for example, automation of tax reporting, ”paperless" transportation, etc.
