Gazprom Neft scientists have assessed the populations of birds and marine mammals in the Northern Sea Route area, exploring a stretch of more than 2,000 kilometers from the Arctic Gate oil loading terminal in the Gulf of Ob to the Barents Sea.

Monitoring of biodiversity is one of the key areas of Gazprom Neft's environmental program. When conducting research, the company's specialists use scientific methods that guarantee the accuracy and comparability of long-term data. Ecologists, biologists and zoologists observe the nature of the Arctic from research vessels and using digital technology. For example, the use of autonomous camera traps helps specialists to continuously study animals in their natural environment: the camera takes a picture on its own if the built-in sensor detects movement.

In 2025, on the route of the Arctic expedition, scientists encountered about 20 species of birds and mammals, including rare representatives of the Red Book. The researchers observed beluga whales and walruses in the Barents Sea, and polar bears in the Kara Sea. Along with monitoring the fauna, ecologists conducted water studies in the Gulf of Ob.

Viktor Sorokin, Head of Gazprom Neft's Industrial Safety Department:

"The expeditions of our ecologists confirm that the natural diversity and good conditions for animals are preserved in the Gulf of Ob. We regularly observe different species and collect scientific data to analyze the dynamics. Modern technologies help us quickly obtain reliable information about the state of flora and fauna, which allows us to develop our projects without disturbing the natural balance."
