The Arkhangelsk Region hosts an annual stage of preventive flood control measures aimed at reducing the risks of flooding of settlements. In the estuary of the Severnaya Dvina River, special vessels remove obstacles in the path of the ice drift. The work is carried out by the Dvinaregionvodkhoz branch of the Centerregionvodkhoz. Rosvodresursy allocated 23.3 million rubles for the implementation of measures in 2024.

"The icebreaking vessels Kapitan Chadaev and Kapitan Evdokimov will have to travel over 700 kilometers in the coming days. Work began at the Nikolsky and Maymaks branches, the next step is the section from Arkhangelsk to the village of Vainovo. The destruction of the ice cover in the arms of the mouth and above along the riverbed of the Northern Dvina makes it possible to prepare a water body for the descent of ice into the White Sea. The passage of the ice drift is also influenced by weather conditions – wind direction, current and air temperature," explained Anna Kosyanenko, director of the Dvinaregionvodkhoz branch.

Earlier, to reduce the risks of congestion, the Dvinaregionvodkhoz branch performed ice-cutting operations in the upper reaches of the Northern Dvina. The coating was destroyed in sections with a total length of over 120 kilometers. Ice–cutting machines and bar-type ground-cutting installations passed from the confluence of the Sukhona and South rivers in Veliky Ustyug to Krasavino in the Vologda region, and then to Kotlas in the Arkhangelsk region.

In general, in 2024, Rosvodresurs allocated 24.1 million rubles for icebreaking and ice-cutting operations in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions.
