As part of a joint project between Rosneft and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, scientists from Siberian Federal University conducted the most extensive monitoring of wild reindeer migration in the territory of the Vostok Oil project in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. For the first time in the history of observations of these animals in Eastern Siberia, 112 individuals of the Taimyr-Evenk population were marked with satellite collars at once.

In real time, the scientists tracked the direction of the animals' movements. According to the results of observations in the eastern and central parts of the Taimyr Peninsula, the number of deer was up to 330 thousand individuals. According to scientists, the decrease in the Taimyr-Evenki deer population over the past 25 years from 500 to 325 thousand is due to global warming. In the Arctic latitudes, weather conditions atypical for deer are manifested – the greening of the tundra, which leads to a change in the usual habitat and migration in summer to cooler places.

In 2024, SibFU scientists, with the support of Rosneft, "will continue research in the Western Taimyr. The total area of the surveyed territory will be at least 360 thousand km2. Such monitoring is necessary to make timely decisions on the conservation of the unique deer population. The importance of this biological species is extremely high. Wild reindeer is not only a key bioindicator species of the Arctic zone, but also the basis for preserving the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North. Representatives of the local population are members of research groups on the accounting of deer and will be able to use the data obtained in the conduct of ancestral fisheries in the future.

Rosneft, together with the Siberian Federal University, has been studying the state of the population, abundance and migration of wild reindeer in the Krasnoyarsk Territory since 2014. Within the framework of the national Ecology project, Rosneft is implementing a corporate program for the study, conservation and monitoring of key species – bioindicators of the stability of Arctic ecosystems: polar bear, Atlantic walrus, wild reindeer and white gull.

As part of the program, from 2024 to 2027, Rosneft will conduct large–scale research in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory - an aerial survey of polar bears in the Kara Sea, monitoring of wild reindeer, and studying fish from the mouth of the Yenisei River. In addition, scientists will build maps of the ecological sensitivity of the shores of the Yenisei Bay and the adjacent waters of the Kara Sea, checking the nesting of valuable bird species.
