RusHydro has built and commissioned a 10 MW Tower hydroelectric power plant in the Chechen Republic. Today it is the largest hydropower facility in the region, the company said.

A new hydroelectric power station has been built on the Argun River (Terek River basin) in the Itum-Kalinsky district. In this section, the river has a large height difference of 40 m over a length of 1.4 km.

The plant will generate 52 million kWh of environmentally friendly, renewable electricity per year, which is enough to provide electricity to more than 10,000 households.

The station was created according to a derivational scheme — without a high-rise dam, land flooding or affecting the water regime of the river. The structures of the hydroelectric power plant include a head water intake unit, a pressure basin, turbine water pipes, and a station building.

The water pressure on the turbines is created by means of a drainage tunnel pierced in the mountains with a length of almost 1.5 thousand meters, through which 30 cubic meters of water per second can pass. Two hydroelectric units with a capacity of 5 MW each are installed in the HPP building. All the equipment is manufactured by Russian companies. Its installation was carried out by specialists of the Hydraulic Repair Company-VKK (part of RusHydro).

The Tower HPP was built as part of RusHydro's comprehensive program for the development of small-scale hydropower in the North Caucasus Federal District. Eight hydroelectric power plants have already been built under the program.
