The volume of electric generation in Russia in 2025 decreased by 1.5% compared to 2024 to 1194.4 billion kWh. According to the operational information of JSC SO UES, electricity generation by UES power plants of Russia in 2025 amounted to 1166.4 billion kWh. Electricity generation by power plants of technologically isolated territorial energy systems in 2025 amounted to 16 billion kWh. Electricity consumption in the UES of Russia in 2025 amounted to 1161.2 billion kWh, which is 0.8% lower than the corresponding indicator in 2024 (excluding the impact of an additional leap year day).
The IEA has forecast global electricity demand growth of 3.6% per year in 2026-2030. This will be facilitated by increased consumption from industry, electric vehicles, air conditioning systems, and data centers. In 2025, global electricity demand increased by 3% year-on-year. This was preceded by a 4.4% increase in 2024, when strong heat waves and high industrial activity led to increased consumption. In the future, the average annual growth in demand over the next five years will be 50% higher than the average over the previous decade. Emerging economies will form the main pillar of demand growth, accounting for almost 80% of additional consumption by 2030.
The average monthly equilibrium electricity purchase prices in the competitive market in January 2026 decreased by 1.6% in Europe and the Urals compared to the previous month, and increased by 8.1% in Siberia. Compared to the same period a year earlier, the equilibrium average prices in the first energy zone were 18.5% higher in January, and 21.8% higher in the second. The difference between the average equilibrium price in these two zones in January was 1.6%. The price dynamics of the past month was relatively flat in both the first and second energy zones — there were no price spikes with a drop of more than 15%.
The Russian Ministry of Energy has published a draft law on investments in the Russian electric power industry. The project is aimed at creating a comprehensive legal framework for the accelerated and efficient development of the Russian electric power infrastructure in the long term. It is proposed to establish the public law company Rosenergoproekt as an institute for development in the electric power industry. The company will, among other things, develop and update standard documentation and technological solutions, form an industry order, and approve price limits for energy equipment.
