The Australian mining company BHP Group Limited is considering the sale of a desalination plant in Chile, as well as electricity transmission assets, as part of attracting investments in copper mining projects. This is reported in a BHP press release.

The value of the transaction is estimated at $1.5-2 billion, including the cost of power transmission lines of $ 1-1.3 billion and a desalination plant – from $ 500-700 million. The Puerto Coloso desalination plant serves the world's largest Escondida copper mine and pumps 3.8 thousand liters of water per second.

The deal is in line with BHP's plans to raise up to $10 billion from the sale of non-core assets to finance its expanding copper business.

Earlier, the company entered into an agreement to sell 49% of shares in electricity transmission assets for iron ore enterprises in Western Australia and signed a contract for the supply of silver worth $4.3 billion to Antamina in Peru.

BHP plans to focus on copper and potash production, divesting assets in the oil and gas and coal sectors and investing in large-scale copper production projects, including expansion at the Escondida field in Chile and Vicuña in Argentina.

BHP Group is an Australian multinational mining and metallurgical company with headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.
