Toyota Motor Corp. It intends to invest $3.6 billion in a manufacturing center in San Antonio (Texas) for the production of the popular Tacoma pickup truck. This is reported in a Toyota press release.
The investments are aimed at expanding production in San Antonio in order to move the company from Tijuana (Mexico) to Texas. The project provides for the creation of new jobs in the United States, the construction of a second car assembly line at the San Antonio plant, doubling the plant's area by 2030 and increasing production capacity from 200 thousand to 350 thousand cars.
Since the opening of the San Antonio campus in 2003, Toyota has invested $8.3 billion in the project. In 2020, Toyota moved production of Tacoma pickups from Texas to the Guanajuato plant and is now moving it back to the United States. At the same time, Toyota will continue to manufacture cars in Guanajuato (Mexico).
The San Antonio plant is currently producing the Toyota Tundra pickup truck and the Sequoia hybrid SUV. In addition, preparations are underway for the construction of a new rear axle manufacturing plant worth $531 million.
Toyota's plans are in line with the company's strategy to increase investments in the United States by $10 billion until 2030. Earlier, the Trump administration announced the termination of the trilateral trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.
The deal could also be of strategic importance in competing with General Motors for the title of the best-selling automaker in the United States. In 2026, Toyota intends to close the sales gap with GM by increasing demand for hybrids, despite declining sales of electric vehicles.
