A delegation from Iraq, which included representatives of the Government, the Ministry of Electricity, and the Atomic Energy Commission of the Republic, visited the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI". The main topic of discussion was cooperation in the field of education.

In the very near future, Iraq plans to develop nuclear energy and create a nuclear power plant in the country that will help solve the energy crisis. Baghdad intends to use peaceful nuclear energy in industry, agriculture, and healthcare. And, of course, competent specialists are needed to work in this difficult high-tech field.

"We are preparing for the construction of a nuclear power plant, we may need from 1,000 to 2,000 specialists of different levels. Therefore, we are grateful to the NRU MEPhI for the invitation and hope that cooperation with the nuclear University will help us train such a large number of personnel. We are interested in sending students to MEPhI for higher education," said Hamed Maidi Hyal Al Bahili, Adviser to the Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Iraq.

Dmitry Savkin, Vice-Rector, Associate Professor of the Department of International Relations at the MEPhI National Research University, told the guests from Iraq about the history of the university's creation, scientific laboratories and educational opportunities.

"NRU MEPhI is among the top 5 best universities in Russia and consistently holds high positions in global rankings. We have 16 regional sites, two foreign campuses have been opened – in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The university has more than 1,500 international students, including those from Iraq. We have about 60 different educational programs, teaching is conducted in Russian and English," Dmitry Savkin cited impressive figures.

Associate Professor of the Department of Experimental Nuclear Physics and Cosmophysics Alexander Khromov added that excellent educational opportunities for foreign students who are going to work in the nuclear industry have been created in Moscow and Obninsk, where new materials are being developed, fundamental physics is being studied, and interesting scientific experiments are being conducted.

Then the guests from Iraq asked questions to representatives of the MEPhI Research Institute and the Rosatom State Corporation and went on an excursion to the scientific laboratories of our university.

The nuclear plans of the Republic of Iraq look very ambitious and, of course, it is necessary to combine efforts to implement them.
