The decision to issue a license to extend the service life was made after Rostechnadzor representatives conducted a comprehensive analysis and verification of the condition of equipment and documentation of Leningrad NPP power unit No. 4 with RBMK-1000 reactor for compliance with modern safety and reliability requirements, implementation of measures to modernize and replace elements that have reached their end of life, registration and technical inspection of equipment. Earlier, the technical condition of the unit was assessed by the design and research organizations of JSC Atomenergoproekt, JSC Scientific Research and Design Institute of Energy Engineering named after N.A. Dollezhal, and the National Research Center Kurchatov Institute.
"Work on extending the service life of existing Russian nuclear power plants has been underway since 1998. Our blocks are no exception. The additional period of operation is not only about generating electricity. These include jobs, continued development of unique isotope products, and systematic work on the construction and commissioning of two new VVER-1200 units," said Vladimir Pereguda, Director of the station.Rostechnadzor also decided to issue a license for the management of radioactive substances during their production, transportation and storage, that is, for the production of isotope products at RBMK-1000 power unit No. 4 until 2030. Currently, Rosenergoatom has the capabilities of rhythmic operation at the Leningrad NPP power reactors: molybdenum-99 (activation), iodine-125, iodine-131, samarium-153, lutetium-177, used in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. At the request of Russian and foreign manufacturers of radiopharmaceuticals, Rosenergoatom produces and regularly expands the range of medical radioisotopes produced at power reactors. In addition, the generating company produces about 30% of the world's consumption of sterilized cobalt-60 using nuclear power reactors.
