At the CIPR-2024 conference, in the presence of Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Communications Maksut Shadaev and Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Bakanov, an agreement on cooperation in the field of satellite technology applications was signed between Russian Railways and the Russian space company BUREAU 1440. The document was signed by Evgeny Charkin, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways, and Alexey Shelobkov, General Director of BUREAU 1440.
The parties agreed to develop digital services based on a low-orbit satellite constellation, as well as create in-demand industry IT solutions.
The broadband data transfer service will allow up to 10 times the data transfer rate (from 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s per subscriber terminal) and significantly reduce the data transfer delay (from 700 ms to 70 ms).
"In any country, after households, the transport industry is the second consumer in terms of space services. We actively use satellite navigation technologies, remote sensing of the Earth, and space communications in our projects, but we lack satellite resources themselves. We are glad that new projects are emerging in our country in the field of creating low–orbit satellite groupings," said Dmitry Bakanov, Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia.
"Russian Railways is the first in the country to launch a project to integrate a satellite broadband service with train information systems. Improving the quality and accessibility of communication services for passengers is a key task that we solve through the introduction of advanced technologies. Services based on low-orbit satellite communications will be in demand both in the passenger complex and for cargo transportation throughout Russia, including for the operation of unmanned vehicles. We plan to start testing the system in 2025," explained Evgeny Charkin, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways.
The implementation of the project will allow the introduction of intelligent transport systems providing for automation of management processes, monitoring and transmission of information of transport infrastructure facilities through secure communication channels in real time. In particular, communication channels will be created for unmanned vehicles, as well as for disaster recovery of resources and maintaining management of critical infrastructure.
"Satellite technologies will optimize logistics, improve the quality of customer service and increase the overall level of security. We are proud of the trust that our partners have placed in us, and we will make every effort to fulfill all our plans. Our experience and technical competencies allow us to guarantee stable and reliable operation of satellite services, which will increase the efficiency and safety of transportation," said Alexey Shelobkov, General Director of BUREAU 1440.
BUREAU 1440 is creating a commercially successful broadband data transmission service based on its own low-orbit satellite constellation. Starting in 2021, the company has gone from a research project to the start of real work on creating a global high-speed data transmission system. In June 2023, the first three spacecraft were launched into low orbits. On the night of May 16-17, 2024, the launch of the spacecraft of the second experimental mission, Rassvet-2, took place.
