The South Korean chip manufacturing company SK Hynix plans to invest $3.87 billion in the construction of the first chip assembly plant in the United States. This is reported in the press release of SK Hynix.

SK Hynix's decision is in line with the Joe Biden administration's strategy to bring chip manufacturing back to the United States within the framework of the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. The law provides significant incentives for companies that localize chip production, provided that production activities are limited in countries that are considered dangerous to national security. In particular, the administration allocated $8.5 billion to Intel for new developments.

The company, which is scheduled to launch in 2028, will focus on the production of high-bandwidth chips for Nvidia GPUs used in the development of innovative artificial intelligence systems, including ChatGPT, to increase the sustainability of the supply chain and the development of the local semiconductor ecosystem.

The project provides for the creation of a research center for the development of innovative technologies in the chip manufacturing sector.

The semiconductor manufacturing market in the United States is changing amid investments from major Asian chip manufacturers. In particular, Samsung is building a $17 billion chip manufacturing plant in Texas, and TSMC has allocated $40 billion to build two foundries in Arizona.

SK Hynix is a South Korean DRAM and NAND semiconductor manufacturing company. The company is the world's third largest manufacturer of chips and one of the top five manufacturers of RAM. The headquarters is located in Icheon (South Korea).
