The 1614th issue of the bulletin "Branches of the Russian Economy: Manufacturing, Finance, Securities. Electric Power Industry" of the AK&M Information Agency.
The volume of electric generation in Russia in January 2025 decreased by 3.5% compared to the same period in 2024 to 114 billion kWh. The reason for the reduction lies in the weather factor — the weighted average temperature in the territory of the UES of Russia in January 2025 was -5.8 °C, which is 7.1 ° C higher than in January 2024. The turnover of electric power industry enterprises in January 2025 amounted to 1044.1 billion rubles, which is 4.5% lower than the value a month earlier and 11.1% higher than in January 2024.
Global electricity consumption will grow by 4% per year in the next three years. This forecast was published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Active energy consumption is being driven by the growth of industrial production, increased use of air conditioning, accelerated electrification, and the development of data centers around the world, it estimates. The agency notes that global electricity demand grew by 4.3% in 2024 and is projected to continue to grow at around 4% through 2027. Over the next three years, global electricity consumption is projected to grow by an unprecedented 3,500 TWh.
The volume of electricity exports from Russia in 2024 decreased by 17.6% year-on-year to 8.53 billion kWh. Such data was published by PJSC Inter RAO. Imports increased by 15.5% to 1.93 billion kWh. Kazakhstan accounted for almost 54% of exports in 2024 — 4.6 TWh. Mongolia became the second country in terms of electricity exports from the Russian Federation, with supplies there amounting to 1.3 TWh, or 16% of the total. Exports to China amounted to only 0.9 TWh, to other countries — 1.7 TWh. Exports to China decreased by more than 2 billion kWh, due to restrictions in the Far Eastern energy system.
In 2024, 11 thermal generation facilities with an installed capacity of 1876.8 MW were commissioned in Russia as part of the implementation of investment projects of generating companies. Such data is provided in the report of CFR JSC. As part of the selection of projects for the implementation of measures to modernize the generating facilities of thermal power plants, 13 generation facilities with a total installed capacity of 2,062 MW were scheduled to be commissioned in 2024. Of the planned generation facilities for 2024, 9 have been commissioned with an installed capacity of 1,627 MW. Additionally, in 2024, 2 facilities with a total installed capacity of 249.8 MW were commissioned, scheduled for commissioning in 2022-2023. The implementation of the 2024 plan was 91%. In total, by the end of 2024, 31 generation facilities with a total installed capacity of 6408.2 MW were commissioned, with a plan of 35 generation facilities with a total installed capacity of 6843.2 MW.
