The Government of Ghana is considering the possibility of buying out the share of the Russian oil company LUKOIL in one of the offshore fields. This is reported by foreign media.
Ghana insists that it holds a pre-emptive right to acquire 38% in the Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points (DWT/CTP) offshore block, and has engaged consultants to independently assess the value of the stake, officially notifying LUKOIL of its intention to exercise its right.
Ghana, like some other African states, is seeking to reduce the presence of foreign oil corporations in order to manage resources independently, leaving most of the profits.
The Ghanaian government's decision is related to LUKOIL's previously announced agreement with the American company Carlyle to sell Lukoil International GmbH, which owns the Russian company's foreign assets. LUKOIL's share in DWT/CTP is presumably included in the portfolio of assets that Carlyle will buy out.
DWT/CTP is a deepwater oil block located in West Africa offshore Ghana in the Gulf of Guinea. The DWT/CTP block presumably includes the undeveloped Pecan field project, as the risks of European sanctions against LUKOIL put pressure on the project and became one of the reasons for the withdrawal of Norwegian Aker Energy. In 2023, Africa Finance Corp. became the operator of the block. through the energy company Pecan Energies Ltd, which received 50% after the exit of Aker.
US sanctions have forced LUKOIL to sell its overseas asset portfolio, which includes oil fields, refineries and gas stations from Iraq to Finland.
Several companies, including the American investment company Carlyle Group, Saudi Midad Energy and the American billionaire Todd Boehly, associated with the investment bank Xtellus Partners and the fund from the UAE Alliance Investment Partners, have already signed agreements with LUKOIL.
LUKOIL is one of the largest Russian oil companies. The company is engaged in the exploration, production and refining of oil and natural gas, as well as the sale of oil and petroleum products. The headquarters is located in Moscow (Russia). The company carries out exploration and production in a number of countries around the world, with major projects concentrated in Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East.
On August 7, 2024, the AK&M rating agency confirmed the highest level of the LUKOIL Group's non-financial (in the field of sustainable development) reporting.
According to RA AK&M, by the end of 2024, LUKOIL is among the leaders of the fifth carbon footprint rating and the eighth social efficiency rating of the largest Russian companies.
