Since 2024, the MISIS University of Science and Technology will begin training specialists in the field of quantum materials science, technology and communications — first undergraduates, and a few years later bachelors. For this purpose, the Institute of Physics and Quantum Engineering has been created in the structure of the university, which aims to create a system of training highly qualified specialists for the formation of a competitive quantum technology industry in Russia. Alexey Fedorov, PhD, Head of the laboratory "Quantum Information Technologies" of NUST MISIS and RCC, was appointed Director of the Institute. The Institute was established as part of the implementation of the "Priority 2030" program.

One of the key challenges of the development of quantum technologies in Russia and in the world is the training of highly qualified personnel: existing educational programs are focused on the training of researchers in the field of quantum technologies. But for the development of this direction, specialists with engineering skills are also needed: quantum engineers, technologists and developers.

The Institute of Physics and Quantum Engineering established at MISIS University, along with conducting scientific research, will modernize approaches to physics and mathematics education in general, as well as, together with quantum industry companies, create a modern educational program for training specialists in the field of quantum engineering.

Sergey Salikhov, First Vice-Rector of MISIS University:

"Today, NUST MISIS is one of the few research and educational centers in the country that simultaneously develop all three quantum directions: computing, communications, sensors. The university's scientists took part in the creation of both national roadmaps in this area, which are implemented by Rosatom and Russian Railways. Therefore, the creation of the Institute of Physics and Quantum Engineering is a logical continuation of the work that was started at the university by Nobel laureate Alexei Abrikosov. Now we have to develop educational programs with the right balance of fundamental training and solving practical problems. Thanks to the research base created at the university for the training of quantum engineers, we will use an integrated approach to education, which will provide graduates with knowledge at all levels of quantum technologies - from advanced materials to quantum algorithms — and create an advantage for them in the labor market."

MISIS University is one of the most active participants in the development of quantum technologies in Russia. In 2011, the laboratory "Superconducting Metamaterials" became the first in Russia to perform measurements of qubits at ultra-low temperatures. In 2022, laboratory scientists demonstrated for the first time a functioning four-qubit quantum processor. In 2023, scientists of the NTI Center "Quantum Communications" launched into orbit the country's first small spacecraft to test the laser communication channel between the ICA and the ground receiving station.

The volume of R&D in the quantum direction is about 25% of the total volume at the university. The University conducts joint research with 15 partner organizations, including the Russian Quantum Center, Rosatom, Russian Railways, Gazprombank, Sberbank, MIPT, Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

The Institute will include more than 10 laboratories and centers already conducting successful research in the field of quantum technologies and communications.

The Institute's staff also has an ambitious goal — to establish cooperation with the key centers of quantum science and education of the BRICS countries.
