A public transport workers' strike is taking place in Germany on March 19-20 at the call of the German trade union Verdi. This is reported by foreign media.
The strike is part of an ongoing conflict between the Verdi trade union and the management of BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) over public transport management.
The union demands a salary increase of 750 euros per month for 12 months and higher allowances for shifts.
BVG considers the demands of the union financially unrealizable and hopes for a compromise solution, taking into account the concessions made, by offering a 13% increase in wages in total, including an increase of 240 euros per month in 2025 and another 135 euros in 2026.
From the point of view of the Verdi management, such measures are "inadequate" given the rising cost of living. The union called on BVG to submit a more reasonable proposal.
A new round of negotiations will be held on March 21.
BVG is a government agency for the management of passenger transportation (metro, city buses, trams and ferries). The headquarters is located in Berlin (Germany).
Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (Verdi) is a united trade union of service sector workers with headquarters in Berlin (Germany). The union was founded in 2001 as part of the merger of five separate trade unions. Verdi is a member of the German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB) and has about 1.9 million members, being the second largest trade union in Germany after IG Metall.
