Romania's stock market has surged amid government plans to sell a large number of shares of state-owned companies on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. This is reported by foreign media.

The main rate index in Romania, which lagged behind similar indicators in the region for most of 2025 due to the political situation, rose by more than 20% after the election of a new government, which expects to sell more government stakes in 2025 in order to reduce the budget deficit and increase investor interest.

In early August 2025, the government intends to publish a list of companies that may become candidates for an IPO, including Bucharest Airports or Constanta Port Administration, or for the sale of shares, including state-owned energy companies Hidroelectrica SA, Romgaz SA and Transelectrica SA.

As part of the IPO on the Bucharest Stock Exchange, Fondul Proprietatea, controlled by Franklin Templeton, raised $1.8 billion from the sale of a minority stake in Hidroelectrica in 2023.

The Bucharest Stock Exchange lags behind the region's largest markets, including Poland, which is by far the largest equity market in the region, where shares of PGE SA and Tauron SA more than doubled in 2025.

The market capitalization of the Bucharest Stock Exchange is $74 billion.
