The Azimut company of Rostec State Corporation has installed the AORL-AMI 2700 digital radar at Mendeleevo Airport on the southernmost island of the Great Kuril Ridge — Kunashir. The new radar will allow aircraft to take off and land in dense fog conditions, which are not uncommon on the island. The equipment will improve the transport accessibility of the Kuril Islands.

The AORL-AMI 2700 radar determines the position of aircraft more accurately than its predecessors, and also allows you to increase the airport's capacity. In addition, the new type of radar will significantly improve the quality of information exchange with aircraft and reduce the burden on dispatching services. Other advantages of the development include small dimensions and low energy consumption.

"The installation of AORL-AMI 2700 in Mendeleevo will help solve one of the most pressing problems of air traffic to the island — frequent dense fogs, which caused the airport to operate intermittently. Our radar "sees" airplanes even in bad weather, which allows controllers to control aircraft regardless of weather conditions. This will contribute both to increasing the island's transport accessibility and to the development of tourism on it," commented Alexey Galchenkov, Deputy General Director of Azimut.

Similar Azimut equipment has already been introduced and is successfully operating in Chukotka, the Kuril Islands, Yamal and other regions of the Far North of Russia.

Azimut is a leading Russian developer and manufacturer of aeronautical systems and complexes for equipping airfields and airways. The company develops, mass-produces and supplies turnkey communications, navigation, landing, surveillance and automation of air traffic control to civil aviation enterprises.
