Norilsk Nickel has created and launched an automatic air monitoring system in Norilsk. This is one of the first projects in Russia that allows you to see the level of air pollution in a city online.

16 environmental monitoring stations have been installed in the Norilsk Industrial District to organize the system. They measure sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), dust, temperature, pressure, and humidity. The system combines various sensors and devices on a single platform and monitors atmospheric air around the clock in different areas of Greater Norilsk (Norilsk, Talnakh, Kayerkan). It allows you to assess the level of atmospheric pollution in the city online. Information on the concentrations of the measured substances is updated every 20 minutes.

Norilsk Nickel organized the system as a city-forming enterprise in Norilsk. Today it has been handed over to the city administration. The system is open to everyone: The administration of Norilsk shows the received data online on the official website of Norilsk.RF in the form of an air quality index, which is calculated based on the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) of pollutants. The air quality index is presented in a convenient color format: green — no pollution, yellow — moderate, red — high. Since the end of 2022, monitoring has been operating in test mode, and the company has been testing and refining it to make the system user-friendly for all users, especially for residents of Norilsk.

Alexander Popov, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Norilsk Nickel, Head of the Polar Division:

Norilsk Nickel consistently fulfills all the obligations assumed by the company within the framework of the federal Clean Air project, and it does this as technologically as possible, using the best available technologies. This is one of the clearest examples of how fulfilling our commitments contributes to real change. The launch of the air quality monitoring system in Norilsk has become a symbol of our responsibility not only to the state, but also to the region, the residents of the city and our employees.

The main consumers of the system are the citizens of Norilsk, and it was for them that it was created in the first place. At any moment, every Norilsk resident will be able to get objective information about how clean the air is. Thus, Norilsk Nickel, which is a city-forming enterprise for Norilsk, demonstrates openness."

Stanislav Seleznev, Vice President for Ecology and Industrial Safety at Norilsk Nickel:

Norilsk Nickel independently organized an atmospheric air monitoring system in residential areas of Norilsk. It is designed to improve the quality of life and protect human health, because if necessary, you can quickly take measures to normalize the situation."

Dmitry Karasev, head of the city of Norilsk:

"For Norilsk, the participation of the city-forming enterprise, Norilsk Nickel, in the federal Clean Air project of the national Ecology project is extremely important. The Sulfur Program, unique for the country and possibly for the whole world, has been implemented within its framework for several years. This project is of great importance for the city. I am glad that the city has received an atmospheric air quality monitoring system that allows you to monitor its condition in real time. Anyone can visit the official website of the city and get acquainted with the current environmental data, including archived data for the last 14 days. Together with Norilsk Nickel, we have launched this system, and I invite everyone to use it. I thank Norilsk Nickel for its openness on environmental issues and the implementation of such an important initiative."

Vladimir Chasovitin, Minister of Ecology of the Krasnoyarsk Territory:

"The implementation of the project to create an air monitoring system will enable residents to monitor the air condition, and companies to take measures if necessary. We believe that this project is very important for all residents of the city, the region and the country as a whole. Creating a safe environment in the city of Norilsk is our common goal."
