Aircraft manufacturer Airbus and German aircraft engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines intend to establish a joint venture to develop and sell an all-electric hydrogen fuel cell engine as part of a previously signed memorandum of understanding. This is reported in the Airbus press release.
The joint venture participants expect to accelerate technology development, design, testing and certification of an innovative hydrogen fuel cell-based powerplant. At the same time, Airbus and MTU will provide broad support within the framework of the project aimed at ensuring strategic sovereignty in the field of next-generation aviation technologies.
The agreement is subject to standard permitting procedures at the European and national levels, taking into account the requirements of the transition to clean energy. The launch of the new joint venture is expected in 2027.
Hydrogen can play a crucial role in significantly reducing the climate impact of aviation in the long term and transforming air transport on a scale comparable to the introduction of electric vehicles in the automotive sector.
Airbus is one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturing companies. Airbus designs and manufactures passenger, cargo and military transport aircraft. The headquarters is located in Blagnac (a suburb of Toulouse, France).
