Terna SpA is considering options to finance new projects and reduce debt obligations, including the sale of a minority stake in the electric grid. This is reported by foreign media.

In particular, Terna has engaged a consultant to evaluate an aggressive investment plan to upgrade the Italian electricity grid as part of a likely financial partnership.

By the end of 2025, the total value of Terna's assets will amount to 24.8 billion euros ($27.8 billion) due to the implementation of the investment program. The company intends to spend more than 23 billion euros over 10 years on the construction of onshore high-voltage lines and underwater crossings. By 2028, Terna's planned investments will increase the value of assets to 32 billion euros (an annual increase of 9% through 2028).

Terna implements projects such as: Tyrrhenian to lay a cable from the Apennine Peninsula to Sardinia and Sicily; laying an underwater power line between Italy and Tunisia; strengthening the line between Sardinia, Corsica and Tuscany, as well as doubling the capacity of the high-voltage line between Italy and Greece.

European electricity grids are in need of major investments due to the dramatic increase in renewable energy installations, which are putting strain on the aging infrastructure. In September 2025, Dutch Tennet Holding BV signed a multibillion-dollar deal with a consortium of Norges Bank Investment Management to sell a stake in the German network.
