The second unit of the Leningrad NPP with the RBMK reactor is being prepared for decommissioning. The removal of nuclear fuel from the power unit has been completed. All fuel assemblies (fuel assemblies), which have developed less than half of the resource, were transported to the existing power units of the station for afterburning. This was reported by Rosatom.

"The possibility and validity of the proposals of Leningrad nuclear scientists on afterburning nuclear fuel from shut down reactors have been confirmed by the institutes of scientific and technical support - NIKIET, Kurchatov Institute and VNIIAES. Due to the afterburning of nuclear fuel, it is planned to save 1010 fresh fuel assemblies," said Arkady Sokolovsky, Deputy Chief Engineer for Nuclear Safety and Reliability of the Leningrad NPP, quoted in the message.
