The Ministry of Digital Affairs of Russia has developed proposals for making changes to the frequency band distribution table between the radio services of Russia.

Thus, it is necessary to provide conditions for the preferential use of 5G networks in the country. In this regard, it is proposed:

  • transmit frequencies in the millimeter range (24.25-27.5 GHz), which are used by radio relay stations, in favor of fifth-generation networks;
  • The conversion of the 4 GHz band to "civilian" will help operators simplify the necessary expertise for 5G networks and obtain guarantees of the use of the band.

When will the initiatives take effect?

Some of the initiatives may come into force from 2023. They will help improve Internet speed and facilitate the introduction of 5G in Russia.

Similar changes are planned to be implemented on the basis of domestic base stations. Back in September last year, the Ministry of Finance of Russia decided that by 2023 only Russian base stations could be installed on the communication network. It is assumed that within 2-3 years mass production of such LTE standard stations will be organized, then it is planned to switch to 5G standard base stations.

Broadcasting of analog television in some regions will be extended for another year

The transition to digital broadcasting was completed in 2019, however, in some regions the broadcasting of regional and municipal channels in analog format continues. We are talking about channels that are not included in the first and second multiplex. In order not to turn off broadcasting and not to cause inconvenience to citizens who are used to watching them, it was decided to extend the broadcasting period of such channels for another year.
