The Federal Scientific and Technical program for the development of genetic Technologies, which started in 2019, has been extended until 2030. The relevant resolution was approved by the Government in order to implement the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation.

As a result of the implementation of the extended program, it is planned to create:

  • with the help of genetic technologies — at least 10 hybrids and varieties of plants, types, crosses and breeds of animals, including aquaculture,
  •  national catalogue of especially valuable samples of plant genetic resources,
  •  scientific and technological products for medicine, agriculture and industry.

Also, the adjustment of the program involves the introduction into industrial production of applied scientific and technological results of activities in the field of genetic technologies.

During the four years of the program, three world-class genomic research centers have been established. Their goal is to conduct breakthrough research mainly of a fundamental and exploratory nature. The work of the centers is aimed at solving problems corresponding to the world level of relevance and significance in the field of genomic research and development of genetic technologies.

At the moment, the centers include 14 organizations, 945 specialists are engaged in research, of which almost half are young researchers. The centers were conceived as a cooperative format for organizing research and development, which, by attracting external research teams to their activities, will ensure the accelerated development of genetic technologies.

In 2022, on the basis of the FIT of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources of N.I. Vavilov, the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources. The work is scheduled to start by the end of 2023. It is also planned to create 3 more national bioresource centers: industrial microorganisms, autochthonous grape varieties, farm animals and their wild related species. The centers will ensure the formation, preservation, development and use of the biological collection.

66 scientific infrastructure facilities were opened for high-quality research activities: 45 laboratories and 21 collective use centers.

Also, thanks to the program, specialized specialists received state support for their research: funding was sent to more than 30 scientific organizations and universities.

On September 1, 2024, the law on the creation of a state system in the field of genetic information comes into force. The Kurchatov Institute will become the operator of the system. To ensure national security, the protection of life and health of citizens will be created National database of genetic information. It guarantees sovereignty in the field of storage and use of genetic data, as well as the exchange of information between government agencies and holders of relevant information. At the moment, a test version of the software of the National Database of Genetic Information has been created.
