The Ministry of Economic Development presented the results of the first stage of the project "Russian Climate Monitoring System". This is reported on the ministry's website.

The key objective of the project is to provide data on climate change and its consequences, including clarifying estimates of greenhouse gas emissions and removals, as well as their subsequent use on an ongoing basis in the implementation of measures aimed at the environmental transformation of economic sectors.

Following the results of the first stage of the project, the National Greenhouse Gas Cadastre clarified 22 coefficients for calculating greenhouse gas emissions in Russia, which determines 28% of total greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, thanks to the implementation of the project, a system for climate monitoring and forecasting of climate change, including the seas of Russia, as well as a monitoring system for the subpolar part of the Atlantic Ocean and the northwestern Pacific Ocean, year-round observations of the state of the seas and key areas of the ocean were provided. The accuracy of the carbon cycle description has increased by 20-70%.

In addition, a network for monitoring carbon uptake by forest and other terrestrial ecosystems has been organized, which by 2030 will include 1,317 thousand test sites for observations of different intensity levels.

The first stage of the project is completed at the end of 2024. It includes the scientific and infrastructural conditions for the functioning of the system and the formation of a methodology for conducting a low-carbon transformation of economic sectors.
