RUSAL and the Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) have agreed to mine up to 5 million tons of bauxite per year in Ghana and build an alumina refinery with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year. This is stated in the message of RUSAL.

The mining project involves the construction and operation of a bauxite mining facility at the Nyinahin deposit in the Ashanti region of southwestern Ghana. The estimated mineral resources of the proposed field site amount to more than 100 million tons of bauxite. The second stage of the project provides for the construction and operation of an alumina plant with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year using bauxite from the Nyinakhin deposit. The plant will run on natural gas.

The projects will be implemented through two joint ventures – Nyinahini Bauxite and Ghana Alumina Company. RUSAL will receive a majority stake in each of them. In accordance with Ghanaian law, the Ghanaian side will receive a minority stake, including an undisclosed 10% stake. The joint ventures will receive rights to explore, mine and process bauxite in Ghana as part of the development of Ghana's integrated aluminum industry.

The projects involve the broad participation of the Ghanaian side: in addition to a share in the capital of joint ventures, they include the creation of jobs during the construction and operation stages, the involvement of local contractors and suppliers, as well as the development of transport infrastructure in Ghana, which will boost the local economy.
